José Tiago Sousa is one of the experts from the group Gender Parity for the CAC, an initiative that brings together professionals of recognized merit in the areas of sustainability, climate and public policies to defend the maintenance of gender parity in the Council for Climate Action (CAC).
José Tiago Sousa, a graduate in Economics and a master’s degree in Finance from the School of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP), is currently a PhD candidate in Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies at NOVA FCT.
His career includes a strong social and humanitarian component, with a particular focus on gender equality issues — and he even participated in the development of the Manifesto for Gender Equality in Education. José Tiago Sousa argues that "men cannot be mere spectators in a process that is shared by the entire society. Gender equality is a human cause and requires the active involvement of everyone".
Regarding men's so-called "historical debt" to women, Tiago states that "recognizing historical privilege is not a gesture of guilt, but of responsibility. Men have benefited from centuries of structures that have favoured access to power, education and decision-making for them. Taking on this historic debt means, today, using this same access to open doors and amplify voices that have been silenced for too long".
José Tiago Sousa emphasizes: "It is not enough to support equality in discourse. Action must be taken — denouncing inequalities where they exist, promoting co-responsibility, and challenging the traditional masculinities that so often perpetuate discrimination. Cultural change requires men to be on the front lines alongside women, not ahead of them".
José Tiago Sousa thus joins a diverse panel of professionals — including economists, environmental engineers, biologists, lawyers and sociologists — who argue that the alleged difficulty in ensuring parity has never been objectively demonstrated, nor is it the result of the lack of qualified women — who exist in a very significant number in the areas of climate, environment, energy, economics, law and science.
With his participation in this group, José Tiago Sousa reinforces the message that the fight for gender equality is a commitment that must unite men and women.
